Bulging Disc Surgery

Bulging disc surgery is used to treat the severest cases of the condition; ones that cannot be effectively treated with less invasive techniques and continue to cause life-altering symptoms. The main purpose of the surgery is to physically remove the portion of the disc that is causing symptoms, and/or to dull the sensation so the person can get their life back.

There are two main types of bulging disc surgery: open back/neck and endoscopic. Here are the main differences:

  • Inpatient versus outpatient - Open back surgery is an inpatient procedure with a hospital stay of days or more. Endoscopic procedures are performed on an outpatient basis, and patients are released within hours of the procedure.
  • Anesthesia - Open back surgery requires general anesthesia to sedate the patient due to significant trauma to the body. Minimally invasive techniques, on the other hand, are performed using IV sedation and local anesthesia.
  • Incision -The incision required for endoscopic procedures is only a few centimeters long, as opposed to the one required for open back and neck procedures, which is several inches or more.
  • Success rate - Endoscopic procedures at Laser Spine Institute have a success rate of more than 87%, which is much higher than open back/neck surgery.
  • Risk of infection - The risk of infection is much lower with endoscopic techniques because the incision is smaller and the procedure is performed in an outpatient setting rather than an inpatient one at a hospital.
  • Recovery time - The recovery time for endoscopic procedures is just a few weeks versus months or more for open back and neck procedures.

If you'd like to learn more about bulging disc surgery, or any of the treatment options for the condition, contact Laser Spine Institute. One of our doctors will be happy to review your MRI or CT scan free of charge and let you know if you qualify for one of these procedures.
